“Look! Deer!” is another of my earliest pieces that reveals the first collisions of my Russian cultural construction immersed in Canadian life. Like its most common companion piece, “Dusk-Lit Gathering”, it combines the majesty of BC’s natural setting with classic Russian matryoshka patterning, and provides a glimpse into the forces that were impacting me in my first days in Canada.
“Look! Deer!” can be paired with a wide variety of pieces in the collection, due to its primarily autumn colors and kitschy nature theme. While “Dusk-Lit Gathering” and “Beautiful Day” are the most obvious choices, “Can’t Resist”, “Graceful Thunder” and “Owl” are among the other fine accompaniments.
“Look! Deer!” is a perfect fit in bedrooms but can also find its place in any country kitchen, cottage living room, or rustic styled hallway/entrance/mud room. As a gift, it’s an anniversary favorite, but is also appropriate for newlyweds.
The original piece was done using an acrylic ink paint on watercolor paper. The technique is very similar to watercolor but tends to keep more vibrant hues and dries permanently to the paper.
